International seminar

Supervision of auditors at a Crossroads: lessons learnt from landmark cases

On this page we provide brief biographies of the participants in the two sessions of the international audit seminar, organised by the CMVM in partnership with the CIRSF - Research Center on Regulation and Supervision of the Financial Sector and with the scientific support of the Florence School of Banking and Finance.


Session I - Public supervisory oversight of auditors in the EU
gfd-audit.jpg Gabriela Figueiredo Dias Chair of the CMVM Management Board since 2016. Holds a Masters in Law from the University of Coimbra, where she also teaches. She worked as a legal advisor and consultant in the private sector for over two decades. In 2007 joined the CMVM advising on international affairs and regulatory policy. Later became Director of the Department of Markets, Issuers and Information and in 2015 took office as Vice-Chair. She is the Chair of ESMA Investment Management Standing Committee and vice-chair of the OECD corporate governance committee.

José Miguel Almeida Member of the Board of the CMVM. Graduate, MBA, Master in Management from the Institute of Economics and Management of the Faculty of Lisbon.. Assistant Professor at ISEG since 2000, he teaches Financial Management of Companies and Investment Policy in Financial Assets, at undergraduate, graduate and master degree levels. Since 2012 he collaborated with the Porto Catholic Business School, where he teaches at post-graduate and executive master levels. He joined the CMVM in 1992
tiago ferreira.jpgTiago Ferreira Director of the Audit Supervision Department of CMVM since 2020. He is a member of task forces and subgroups of the Committee of European Audit Oversight Bodies (CEAOB). Tiago joined the CMVM in 2019 as Coordinator of the Audit Supervision Department. Before he worked for several years in one of the Big Four firms. Tiago holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from the Higher Institute of Accountancy and Administration in Lisbon (ISCAL) and a Post-graduate degree in Advance Accounting from the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE).

Patrick Parent Chair of the Committee of European Auditing Oversight Bodies (CEAOB). He is also senior advisor to the Chair of the Haut Conseil du Commissariat aux Comptes (H3C) for international matters. He spent 14 years with the Autorité des Marchés Financiers (AMF), as Chief Accountant. Represented IOSCO at the IFRS Interpretations Committee and IFRS Foundation Advisory Council. Within ESMA he led the European Enforcers Coordination Sessions (EECS). He holds an MBA from Drexel University and a French Master’s degree in Finance and Accounting.
kp-audit.jpgKevin Prendergast CEO of the Irish Auditing and Accounting Supervisory Authority (IAASA). He is a member of the Consultative Group of the Committee of European Audit Oversight Bodies (CEAOB) and a board member of the International Forum for Independent Audit Regulators (IFIAR). Kevin is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Ireland. As well as a holding a Bachelor’s degree and a Masters in Accounting from University College Dublin, he also holds an MSc in Executive Leadership from the University of Ulster.

Eddy Wymeersch Emeritus Professor University of Ghent, where he founded the “Financial Law Institute”. Former chairman of the Public Interest Oversight Board, the Committee of European Securities Regulators (CESR) and the Belgian Banking and Finance Commission. He has published extensively on company law, corporate governance and financial regulation. He is a member of the European Corporate Governance Forum and of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He studied law at Ghent University and at Harvard Law School.

Nicolas Véron Senior fellow at Bruegel and at the Peterson Institute for International Economics in Washington, DC. His research is mostly about financial systems and financial reform around the world, including global financial regulatory initiatives and current developments in the EU.  Author or co-author of numerous policy papers that include banking supervision and crisis management, financial reporting, the Eurozone policy framework and economic nationalism.

Hanno Merkt Professor and Director of the Institute for Foreign and International Private Law (Instituts für Ausländisches und Internationales Privatrecht) at the University of Freiburg, since 2003. He is also judge at the Karlsruhe Higher Regional Court in the second main office, since 2008. His research priorities include law and economics, US corporate and capital markets law, German and European company and capital market law, among others.

Katja Langenbucher Professor at Goethe-University's House of Finance in Frankfurt and affiliated professor at SciencesPo. Her research projects focus on FinTech, artificial intelligence and corporate governance of banks. She is a member of the German securities market oversight body’s (BaFin) supervisory board and of the German Federal Ministry of Finance’s working group on capital markets law. Author of several publications on corporate, banking and securities law.

Sebastian Mock Professor at Vienna University of Economics and Business. Author of many articles in the field of international company law and securities regulation and of several books, including Market Abuse Regulation-Commentary and Annotated Guide (with M. Ventoruzzo), Comparative Corporate Law (with M. Ventoruzzo, PH Conac, G. Goto, M. Mario Notari and A. Reisberg); Handbook on Shareholders' Agreements-Regulation, Practice and Comparative Analysis (with K. Csach and B Havel).

Giancarlo Spagnolo Professor at SITE-Stockholm School of Economics, EIEF and at the University of Rome Tor Vergata. His research projects focus on antitrust and industrial organization, banking and corporate governance, experimental economics, game and contract theory, law and economics, procurement. Author of several publications, namely “Frequency of Interaction, Communication and Collusion: An Experiment”, (with M. Bigoni and J. Potters).

Alain Deckers Head of Unit of the Corporate Reporting, Audit and Credit Rating Agencies. Has almost 20 years of experience in public service at the European Commission. He has been responsible for policy reviews and policy development in areas including trade in goods, environmental policy, public procurement and financial services regulation. He graduated in Physics and holds a masters in the Economics of Technical Change (University of Manchester).

Thorsten Beck Director of the Florence School of Banking and Finance. He is also professor of banking and finance at the Business School in London and a research fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research and the CESifo. His research has focused on finance and economic development and how to build a sound and effective financial system. He is the author or co-author of numerous academic publications in leading economics and finance journals.

Luís Morais Professor of Law at the Faculty of Law (University of Lisbon). Founder and President of the Center for Research in Regulation and Supervision of the Financial Sector and member of the Scientific Council of AIDA Portugal/Portuguese Section of the International Association for Insurance Law. In 2015 was appointed as member of the Appeal Panel by the Single Resolution Board. He is co-author of books such as "A Europa e os desafios do século XXI”(“Europe and the Challenges of the 21st Century").
